Mielno
This is the village were Sofra is located. It is slotted in on a spit between the Baltic Sea and Lake Jamno. The next village along is Lazy.
Sounds like my sort of place.
Mielno exists as a tourist destination and health retreat. The spit between the lake and sea would be less than a kilometre wide and from what I could see, the soil is almost entirely sand. Despite that, there were a number of well-tended lawns and gardens.
Our first visit to the sea was surprising. Every ten or so metres there is a line of posts heading out into the water. This seems to go unendingly SW but stopped a little way
towards Lazy. On enquiry we were told they are to reduce the force of the waves hitting the beach. Waves on the Baltic Sea? I remain unconvinced. The only benefit I could see goes to the sea gulls.
Lake Jamno is extensive; big enough to run a ferry. They day we chose to ride it unfortunately the captain had snagged a fishing net and it was out of action. We managed a few photos from the wharf anyway.
Slupsk
This small town was a diversion for us from the health spa. Whilst it is well maintained and tries hard, it is of only marginal interest to tourists. We probably spent 3 hours walking around and 5 hours either on or waiting for trains.
The information centre was very helpful and provided a walking tour map with information about the major points. One of the most impressive was the floral clock in the centre just off the old town. The other object that caught our attention was the witches’ tower in the old city walls. Here they reputedly imprisoned accused witches as recently as the 17th century.
I’d like to see a witches tower in Canberra. Yes and let it be used to hold out of favour politicians.
